The Judiciary to Review Some Tax Cases
Ms. Doris Akol and the Hon. Principal Judge, Hon. Justice Dr. Bamwine

The Judiciary will\r\nreview six controversial judgments in which Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) lost\r\nbillions of shillings, the Principal Judge, Hon. Justice Dr. Yorokamu Bamwine pledged. Hon. Justice Dr. Bamwine said the files for the\r\ncases would be recalled to ensure justice and URA will be helped to execute its\r\nmandate. 

\r\n\r\n

Hon. Justice Bamwine\r\nmade the directive during an engagement between the Judiciary and the tax\r\ncollectors in Wakiso District. The cases in question involve several businessmen\r\nwho were charged for various offences of tax evasion or causing revenue loss\r\nbut the convicts were either given sentences deemed as light or escaped\r\nmysteriously.

Hon. Justice Bamwine\r\nsaid tax defaulters should not be allowed to manipulate the legal system and\r\ndeprive the national coffers of its share of due taxes and revenue. 

\r\n\r\n

Hon. Justice Bamwine\r\npledged to harmonize the sentencing trends in tax -related cases in its next\r\nphase of developing sentencing guidelines. 

\r\nThe URA Commissioner General, Ms Doris Akol, who\r\nattended the meeting, said it was called to interface with the Hon. Judges on\r\nhow they can help in enhancing tax compliance.
